Elderly Pedestrian Died in Accident

Early on Wednesday morning, December 2, an elderly pedestrian died having been hit by an SUV.

According to Metro police, the accident happened shortly before 6 a.m. in the intersection of Fremont Street and Eastern Avenue. A 77 year old man was crossing Eastern outside of a marked crosswalk at and entered the path of a 1999 Isuzu Amigo being driven by 54 year old Kenneth Mason who was approaching a green light.

The elderly gentleman was pronounced dead at the scene, and Mason stopped immediately and cooperated with the police.

While police investigated the crash, the entire intersection was closed until around 10 a.m. Initial thoughts are that Mason may have been using his cell phone at the time of the accident although it is still unclear as to whether the pedestrian, who was in a crosswalk, had a green light.

The Clark County coroner’s office will release the man’s identity after next of kin has been notified.

This is the 110th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction.
